| IGA Fall Four Ball Rock Hollow GC, Peru September 7-10, 2007
|
Ron Carter from Monticello and
Brent Hofman from Lafayette teamed up to win the fall 4-Ball held at Rock
Hollow GC in Peru.
The event began on Sept. 7th
with 53 teams, plus last year’s defending champions qualifying for 32 spots for
match play. Completing two rounds per day, the final match came down to Carter
and Hofman against Joe Hillman of Zionsville and Bob Stephens of Indianapolis.
The match remained all-square after 18 holes. Carter and Hofman won the first
extra hole when Hofman sank a birdie putt on #1. Both teams carded a 67 best
ball for the regulation 18 holes.
Stephens and Hillman were able
to get the match to 2-up over Carter and Hofman on the fourth hole of play when
Hillman sank a 20-footer for birdie on the par three. They gave that one back
on the par three eighth when Hofman was the only player to make par, and made the
turn with Stephens and Hillman 1-up.
On the eleventh hole Hofman
nearly aced the par three and converted the putt to birdie to win the hole and
go to all square. Birdies on #13 kept the match at all square after Hillman got
up and down from the hazard for 3 to match Hofman’s birdie putt. Another birdie
for Hofman on#14 put the team at 1-up going into the fifteenth.
After driving the 16th green earlier in the day,
Hillman’s drive in the final match stopped just short. However, his long drive
was not needed when Stephens knocked in his putt for birdie to go back to all
square. Hillman and Stephens had the opportunity to win the match on #18, but
Stephen’s winning putt stopped just short of the hole, actually overhanging the
lip and the teams proceeded to #1 for the extra hole.
After 18 holes, the match
ultimately came down to one putt and once again Hofman was the player to sink
the birdie putt. “I think I’ll take good care of Scotty,” claimed Hofman,
referring to his Scotty Cameron putter.
Semi Finals
Carter and Hofman defeated
Dave Vlasic, Valparaiso and Matt Springer, Gary 3-up with 2 to play in the
semi-final match earlier in the day. Vlasic and Springer were low qualifiers
for the event after carding a 12-under, 60 for the qualifying round.
Hillman and Stephens also won
3-up with 2 to play in the semi-finals over Kyle Perry and his father, Andy
Perry of Marion.
Last year’s champions, Randy Nichols and Skip Runnels
were defeated in the second round by Matt Herig and Jeff Mullin of Richmond.
