June 18th 2008 - Hillcrest Country
Club in Indianapolis welcomed 70 Indiana senior amateurs Wednesday, June 18th,
for the first round of the 7th annual Indiana Golf Association Senior Amateur
Team Championship. Tom Perry and Gus Spicuzza of Indianapolis lead the Four
Ball formatted event after the first round with an 8-under-par 63.
“We really teamed up
well to make nine birdies,” said Perry. Spicuzza added, “We each made bogeys,
but when we did the other made par or birdie.” Both players drove the ball
straight and kept it in the fairway to set up approach shots that could be
placed close to the hole. A lot of the short birdie putts were made to finish
with a 31-32=63.
Perry and Spicuzza
hold a two shot lead over the second place teams of George Wamsley of Monterey
and Steve Paquin of Greencastle and Skip Runnels of Richmond with long-time
teammate Randy Nichols of Brookville. They have partnered together in IGA team
events since 1988 and are seeking their first Senior Team win. Runnels and
Nichols have won the IGA Mid-Am Team Championship twice and the IGA Four Ball
Championship four times, but seek to add a success at the Senior Team to the
list.
Ted Kaperak of Terre
Haute and Russ Campbell of Rockville who shot 5-under-par 66 head into the
final round in third place.
Any Indiana amateur golfers
who reached the age of 55 before the first day of competition were eligible to
pair up and compete. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, with the leaders
teeing off at 10:10 a.m.
