June 26th 2008 - Chris Baker of
Brownstown shot a 1-over-par 72 at Wolf Run Golf Course in Zionsville to extend
his lead to six shots heading into the final round of the Indiana Amateur
Championship. Joe Mahurin of Noblesville and Andrew Rhodes of Sweetser are tied
in second at 217.
A six shot lead over
the field with only 18 holes left gives Baker a significant advantage in his
quest for his first Indiana Amateur title. “It is nice, but it’s a tough
course, and you can’t let up a bit. It can get you out there. I let up on 18
today and made bogey,” he said. His approach shot went beyond the green into
the tall grass, leaving a difficult up and down opportunity. One chip took him
out of the tall grass but only made it to the rough, and the second chip missed
by a foot.
Prior to the final
hole, Baker made one of his three birdies at 17 after getting on the front edge
in two at the 500-yard par 5. Another birdie came at the par 4, ninth hole
where he drove the ball to the right side of the fairway. With the flag
positioned on the left side of the green, it was necessary to place it where he
did to have any shot at the hole. The approach shot landed four feet from the
cup and he made the putt to make the turn under par for the day.
Final round tee
times begin at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning.
