IGA Senior Match Play Old Oakland GC, Indianapolis July23-25, 2007
| Tim Miller of Kokomo defeated
Ron carter of Monticello 3 & 2 in the championship match of the 2007 Senior
Match Play tournament at Old Oakland GC in Indianapolis.
Miller advanced to the finals
after defeating Ted Kaperak in the semi-finals, Jerry Jackson in the
quarterfinals, and Joe Milligan in the first round. Carter bested Steve Paquin
in the semi finals, Ernie Adams in the quarterfinals and Jerry McMullen in the
first round. Beginning the second match of
the day, Miller and Carter remained at all square until the sixth hole when
Carter’s third shot found the hazard behind the green. Miller advanced to
one-up on Carter with a par on the hole. Miller then quickly went to three-up
when Carter’s putter failed to convert the needed pars. Carter gained one back to turn
at two-down when his third shot into the par five #9 stuck at less than six
inches from the hole. Miller missed his five-footer for birdie and gave the
hole to Carter. On the tenth hole carter
caught a flyer over the green and faced a nearly impossible chip from a
downhill lie to a downhill green. After putting once he gave the hole back to
Miller. The eleventh hole found Miller in trouble off the tee with no shot at
the pin. After it took him three to get on the green, Carter was able to
two-putt for par and the win. That was the last hole Miller was to lose.
Halves on #12, #13, #14 and
#15 found the match with Miller still two-up with three holes to play. After
Miller smartly played his second shot with an iron to lay up short of the
bunkers guarding a blind green, Carter played a wood from the left rough to go
for the par five in two. His shot landed to the right of the green, leaving him
a shot past a tree and over a bunker. Miller stuck his third shot to less than
eight inches and was able to make birdie after Carter missed his first putt.
The birdie put Miller in the clubhouse winning the match 3 & 2 over Carter. The Indiana senior amateurs played an 18 hole
qualifying round on Monday with the low 16 advancing to match play. Miller
fired a 68 to be seeded second in the matches. Carter shot 69 to be seeded in
the fourth spot. It took a score of 76 or better to advance. Rounds one and two
were played on Tuesday, with the semifinal and final matches completed
Wednesday.
