IGA Awards Player of the Year Honors to Nichols and Bell
November 1st 2006 -

2006 IGA John K. David Player of the Year - Randy Nichols, Connersville

Established 1984 The John K. David IGA Player of the Year Award is based on points earned by Indiana golfers by virtue of finishing place over the course of the current year's tournament season, both in Indiana and nationally.

For the past 20 + years, Randy Nichols has dominated amateur golf in the state of Indiana. Tonight, Nichols is being presented his 13th John K. David Player of the Year Award; the fifth straight such title since 2002. Nichols won the Player of the Year award consecutively in the years 1988-89, 1991-92 and 1995 through 1998 before this past five-year domination. Nichols has won the award more times than all other winners added together. He amassed a total of 117.85 points for 2006.

Beginning and ending this year with wins at the Mid-Am Team and the Four Ball with partner Skip Runnels, Nichols remained the player everyone else strived to defeat in most every tournament.

Even though he claims he has "not played well this year," Nichols finished tied for 12th in the Senior Open, tied for 6th in the Indianapolis Open, tied for 13th in the State Open and tied for 17th in the Northern Open. Nichols’ game was solid all week in the State Open as he went in to the first 18 holes of the final day with the lead at nine under par.

In amateur only events Nichols finished second in the Mid-Am Championship, tied for 6th in the Tournament of Champions, also tied for 6th in the HH Gregg Championship and advanced to the Round of 16 in the Match Play Championship. Nichols captured the 1996 State Amateur Championship and holds the record for the most top-10 finishes in the tournament, with 18.

On the national scene Nichols has qualified for numerous US Amateur Championships, US Mid-Amateur Championships and the Senior US Open. The 2006 season saw Nichols qualify for match play at the US Mid-Am, though he was defeated in the first round of matches. This week, Nichols is in Florida at the Senior Tour Q-school for qualifying. With all these accomplishments, Nichols values his induction into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame (2001) with the highest regard.

2006 IGA Senior Player of the Year Award – Mike Bell, Indianapolis

Established 2003 The IGA Senior Player of the Year Award is awarded to an Indiana amateur over the age of 55, based on points earned by virtue of finishing place over the course of the current year's tournament season, both in Indiana and nationally.

Mike Bell set some lofty goals for the 2006 IGA tournament season, and achieved two important ones; earning Senior Player of the Year status and winning the USGA Senior Amateur title. For the second straight year Bell reigned as Senior Player of the Year in Indiana. Accumulating 291.50 points, Bell earned 120 points more than second place finisher, Ron Carter.

Bell won the 2006 Senior Amateur Championship title by firing the low score for the second round (also the low round for the tournament). His 69, paired with a first round 74 left him at 1-under par. He also won the senior division of the HH Gregg invitational championship, tied for first low senior at the 106th State Amateur Championship, finished as third low senior in the Southern Open and in 10th place in the Senior Open.

The highlight of the 2006 season for Bell has to be the USGA Senior Amateur title. Bell finished the tournament with trophy and title in hand after two rounds of stroke play and six matches at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind. He made an 8-foot putt for par on the 18th hole to defeat Tom McGraw 1-up in the final match. The title earned Bell enough points to not only win the IGA Senior Player of the Year Award, but also put him at just 10 points behind Randy Nichols for IGA Player of the Year.
